After researching my chosen font, I began sketching out possible ideas in my sketchbook, that I could later develop in Figma. I experimented with different compositions, I made sure that Futura remained the focal point of the design. It was essential to include key information about the font, such as: the year, designer and important facts. To emphasise Futura, I enlarged it, to make it stand out, followed by the year (second largest) and made the information and the designer’s name (smallest).
My sketches on Futura
From discussing my designs with my lecturer, I decided to develop the first, second and forth design to develop on Figma. He advised me to simplify the designs, by removing the alphabet and numbers. He suggested to arrange some elements.
Here are three designs I created using Figma. I used various font weights: bold, italic and regular to vary the style of the font. I used complimentary colours for each design, that go together. In the first design, I utilised two shades of blue and yellow to make the text stand out against the blue background. I decided to place the text inside the “F”, allowed me to make use of the negative space.
In the second design, I created a dynamic effect making the letters appear as if they were falling. I aligned the text with specific letters to maintain a straight visual flow, and I opted for analogous colours: green, blue, and purple. I adjusted the opacity of “1927” and “Paul Renner”, to blend seamlessly with the background.
For the final design, I connected all the letters, and utilised the surrounding spaces for information placement. I intentionally kept negative space around this area, ensuring a clean and uncluttered look. Although I chose burgundy and green for this design I remained uncertain about the harmony of these colours.
My 3 designs done on Figma
During the critique, both my lecturer and peers agreed my third design stood out as the strongest among the three. He suggested to change the colours, to enhance the design. I selected red as the background colour, to include vibrancy, contrasting with the black text to accentuate it. To enhance legibility and create visual interest, I incorporated a blend of orange and white within the "Futura" text, making certain letters stand out from the rest.
