A Brief Introduction to Homeschooling
Children of compulsory school age 5-16 in Northern Ireland must receive “full-time' education”, but this doesn’t have to be a traditional 9-3, Monday-to-Friday schedule.
Each family should find a routine that works for them, and it's okay to adjust your approach if needed.
Having a structured plan can be beneficial, giving children clear expectations. For example, if learning takes place between 9 AM and 12 PM, they’ll understand that this time is dedicated to education. Unlike a classroom setting, one-to-one learning is more efficient, a six-hour school day isn’t necessary. If a topic proves challenging, it can be revisited the next day, allowing time to explore alternative teaching methods.
A well-balanced routine should also include time for physical activity—preferably outdoors. Research highlights the positive impact of exercise on both body and mind. Social opportunities can be through team sports. Every child has different social needs, and what works best will vary from one to another.
If possible, designate a room in your home as a dedicated “schoolroom.”
If space is limited, create a quiet, distraction-free area specifically for schoolwork.
If that’s not an option, establish a morning routine to clear the table and set up all learning materials before lessons begin, this helps keep your child focused and avoids unnecessary distractions.
