Student Success Centre Talk:

This session was really useful for helping me understand the different skills I will need for my dissertation, especially when it comes to finding research, analysing evidence and academic writing.

I found the search strategy section particularly useful. I liked learning about using a Venn diagram to identify keywords and synonyms, using Boolean operators, phrase searching and truncation when using Google Scholar. I had previously struggled with finding articles that were specifically related to my dissertation topic, so I think these techniques will make it easier for me to find more relevant research. I also found citation chaining useful because it showed me that I can find further research by looking at the references and who has cited an article.

Also, I learnt about critical analysis and evidence synthesis. I now understand that I shouldn’t just describe what research has found but also consider its strengths, limitations and whether there are any contradictions between studies. The PEEL structure was also helpful because it gives me a clear way to structure my paragraphs and make sure I am explaining and linking my evidence back to my argument.

We were split up into groups to discuss our dissertation ideas. In my group was: Andrew, Matthew, Kevin, Abi, Lucy and I. It was helpful to get feedback and hear other people’s ideas. I received positive feedback, which is helpful to know I’m heading in the right direction.
