Summary:

Speculative Everything: Beyond Radical Design

I read the first Chapter of this book, as it was discussed during the lecture and wanted to learn the idea behind it.

The chapter explores speculative design as a way to think about the future beyond prediction. Instead of forecasting, it presents plausible, fictional scenarios to spark discussion on the kind of world people want or hope to avoid.

  1. Probable- The most likely future based on current trends and existing knowledge.
  2. Plausible- Futures that could realistically happen under alternative scenarios.
  3. Possible- Futures that align with scientific principles and have a logical path from the present.
  4. Preferable- Futures that people or societies desire, though preferences vary based on power dynamics and social structures.

The authors argue that speculative design, drawing from fields like literature and cinema, can inspire discussions about shaping better futures. Rather than dictating outcomes, design serves as a tool to visualise possibilities, encouraging public debate and collective decision-making. By exploring various scenarios, society can work toward desirable futures while anticipating and addressing potential risks.

This chapter made me realise that the future isn’t just something to predict but something we can actively explore and shape. Speculative design encourages creativity and discussion, helping us question what kind of world we truly want. By considering different future possibilities, we can better understand the present and work toward more desirable outcomes.
