I read the first Chapter of this book, as it was discussed during the lecture and wanted to learn the idea behind it.
The chapter explores speculative design as a way to think about the future beyond prediction. Instead of forecasting, it presents plausible, fictional scenarios to spark discussion on the kind of world people want or hope to avoid.
The authors argue that speculative design, drawing from fields like literature and cinema, can inspire discussions about shaping better futures. Rather than dictating outcomes, design serves as a tool to visualise possibilities, encouraging public debate and collective decision-making. By exploring various scenarios, society can work toward desirable futures while anticipating and addressing potential risks.
This chapter made me realise that the future isn’t just something to predict but something we can actively explore and shape. Speculative design encourages creativity and discussion, helping us question what kind of world we truly want. By considering different future possibilities, we can better understand the present and work toward more desirable outcomes.
Questioning the Present
Speculative Design helps us reflect on current design practices, consumer culture, and the impact of technology on society and the environment.
Exploring Future Possibilities
It imagines different futures: possible, probable, and preferable, through stories and objects that make abstract ideas more concrete.
Sparking Debate
By presenting "what if" scenarios, it encourages discussions about where society is headed, helping us understand the present and make informed choices.
Ethical Awareness
It highlights the ethical impact of technology, ensuring we consider its long-term effects as advancements outpace our understanding.
We need to consider the ethical impact of technology. This approach helps us think critically about where we are headed and how design can shape a better future.
